Mark currently holds a B.M. degree in Music Education from Ohio Wesleyan University focusing in Trumpet and Piano, a Masters of Music degree in trumpet performance from The Ohio State University, and is currently a Doctoral Candidate at The Ohio State University in trumpet performance. Mark has taught K-12 music in Ohio, Texas & South Carolina, including directing orchestra, assisting with band, conducting choruses and teaching general music. Mark has studied with Dr. Larry Griffin, (Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra and Columbus Chamber Music Society), Jim Stokes, (Capital University), Adam Gordon, (Ft. Worth Symphony), Dr. Keith Amstutz, (USC), and Tim Leasure (OSU).
Mark taught Hammered Dulcimer as an adjunct professor at The Methodist Theological School of Ohio, and has given guest lectures and performances at Ohio Wesleyan University, Capital University, and the University of North Texas.
As a Recording Artist and Performer, Mark has released several instrumental music albums and one instructional book/CD for the Hammered Dulcimer. Mark has performed and recorded on Piano, Trumpet, Classical/Acoustic Guitar, Bass Guitar, Pennywhistle, Hammered Dulcimer, and Mountain Dulcimer.
Mark was the 1998 National Hammered Dulcimer Champion, the former 2nd chair of the Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra, and the principal trumpet of the Benedict College Community Orchestra in Columbia, SC, where Mark had the honor of appearing as soloist on Vivaldi's "Concerto in C Major for Trumpet". In the Summer of 2004, Mark served as co-principal trumpet in the Classical Music Symphony Orchestra based in Eisenstadt, Austria, and subsequently toured in Austria, Hungary and Slovakia. Mark's music adventures have allowed him to entertain for such notables as George Bush, and Ross Perot.
Mark's repertoire spans a wide variety of genres, and as such Mark is equally at home playing with a symphony orchestra or jamming in a blue grass band. Mark's music curriculum is representative of the various styles of music that his students enjoy.
Mark has taught every grade level in Music from Pre-Kindergarten to Graduate School, and beyond. Mark has been trained in traditional music pedagogies, (e.g. Suzuki, Orff, Kodaly, Delcroze), and new contemporary music pedagogies, (e.g. The Music Learning Theory).
Mark's enthusiastic teaching style motivates both children and adults alike, and his flexible approach to teaching all styles of learners is evident in the many successes of his students. In addition, Mark has a number of long-distance learners who do lessons on CD by mail. (Call to inquire).
